Heart Rate Alerts: Setup and FAQ
Heart Rate Alerts are part of Heart IQ, with a Cardiogram Premium subscription. When enabled, Cardiogram can notify you if your heart rate goes above or below thresholds you set, helping you stay more in tune with your health.
🔔 What are Heart Rate Alerts?
Cardiogram can send a push notification to your phone and/or wearable when your heart rate rises above or drops below your chosen limits.
To prevent false alarms, Cardiogram will only send an alert if:
- It receives at least two consecutive readings above or below the threshold
- The data is less than 3 hours old
⚠️ If you’re using Fitbit or Garmin, Cardiogram receives data only when the device syncs with the Fitbit or Garmin app.
✅ How to enable Heart Rate Alerts
- Open the Cardiogram app
- Tap the ☰ menu (top-left of the Timeline screen)
- Tap Settings > General
- Scroll to Heart Rate Alerts and set your desired min and max values
- Toggle the alerts ON
📌 Cardiogram alerts are push notifications. Be sure notifications are enabled on your phone:
iPhone:
- Go to your iPhone's Settings > Cardiogram > Notifications
- Turn on Allow Notifications
Android:
- Go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > Cardiogram > Notifications
- Turn on Show Notifications
🔁 If you reinstall the app or switch phones
You’ll need to re-enable notifications and toggle alerts back on after reinstalling Cardiogram or using a new phone.
🕒 Why heart rate notifications might be delayed
Heart rate alerts depend on when your wearable syncs new data:
- Your watch collects heart rate in the background
- It syncs data to your phone when connected (not constantly, to conserve battery)
- Once data reaches your watch app (Apple Health, Fitbit, Garmin Connect, etc.), Cardiogram imports it
- Cardiogram analyzes the data
- If the heart rate crosses your threshold, Cardiogram sends an alert to your phone and wearable
🔁 This process can introduce some delay, especially on wearables that sync less frequently.
❌ Not receiving heart rate alerts?
Here’s what to check:
- Notifications disabled?
Re-enable them in your phone’s Settings → See steps in Enabling Heart Rate Alerts above
Not enough data?
Alerts only trigger if Cardiogram receives at least two recent readings outside your threshold
Your wearable hasn’t synced recently?
- Cardiogram only alerts based on data that is less than 3 hours old
- If you're using Fitbit or Garmin, open their companion app regularly to keep Cardiogram up to date
